How does it work?
IPL skin rejuvenation works by delivering controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light into the skin. The light energy is absorbed by chromophores within the skin, particularly melanin (pigment) and haemoglobin (blood vessels). This process generates gentle heat which helps to break down excess pigmentation and visible vessels, while also stimulating the skin’s natural healing response and collagen production. A hand-held applicator is placed in contact with the skin surface and light pulses are delivered to the treatment area. The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area and the process is repeated until the full treatment area has been covered.
Who can be treated?
IPL skin rejuvenation is most suitable for individuals with lighter skin tones (typically Fitzpatrick skin types I–III). The treatment is particularly effective for concerns such as sun damage, pigmentation, redness, thread veins and uneven skin tone. Because darker skin contains a higher level of melanin in the surrounding tissue, the light energy may also be absorbed by the skin itself, increasing the risk of unwanted side effects. For this reason, IPL rejuvenation is generally not recommended for higher Fitzpatrick skin types (V–VI). A full consultation and skin assessment will always be carried out prior to treatment to determine suitability.
How many treatments are required?
The number of treatments required will vary depending on the individual skin concern being treated and the condition of the skin. Some conditions, such as deeper pigmentation or vascular concerns, may require multiple sessions. Maintenance treatments may also be recommended to help sustain results over time.
How do I prepare for treatment?
The treatment area should be clean and free from makeup, skincare products, or self-tanning products on the day of treatment. Clients should avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and fake tan for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment, as increased skin pigmentation can increase the risk of adverse reactions. Any active skin irritation, infection or inflammation in the treatment area should be reported before treatment. Full pre-treatment guidance will be provided during your consultation.
