Like many other beauty salons, spas or skin centres we are very good at updating our websites and social media with information about treatments and the latest product launches. We are ambassadors for what we offer and firmly believe that the service we provide can guarantee results on different levels.
However, aside from the obvious is there a deeper effect, that goes beyond the dermis, that we never really discuss? It’s astonishing to learn that just 1 in 8 women consider themselves attractive and have the confidence to say so, that means there is a huge amount of beautiful women out there that just can’t even see it. Ranking as the biggest reason why, most of the women polled felt that their looks and in particular their skin (rated above weight!) was the main reason why they had low self esteem and a lack of confidence. This debate has raised many questions at Zest HQ about just how much of an impact we as skin professionals can have on our clients and actually how difficult it must be for some to even have the courage to book their first appointment.
This brings me to the reason why I wrote this blog. I recently asked one of my very good clients (who I now consider a valued friend) to write a few words for our website about her experiences at Zest. What she sent me was a little more than I hoped for!
Please enjoy and I hope this lady can inspire many more deserving women, and men, to face their fears and feel fantastic again! Louise x
“I developed acne in my late teens, into my 20’s and my skin progressively got worse, the only respite I got from (by this time) severe acne was through repeat prescribing of antibiotics.
I tried every topical product on the market, drank gallons of purifying liquids, attended homeopaths, naturopaths, swallowed handfuls of herbal remedies the list of tried and failed remedies never seemed to be exhausted. I felt I was facing a life of severe skin problems with no escape of the pain, discomfort and hammer blows to my confidence. I don’t consider myself to be a particularly vain person but I have a career which involves meeting new people every day, attending large meetings and often chairing such meetings. I knew I was defined as the woman with the bad skin, even a (well meaning) friend once told me she was so used to the way my skin looked it was just who I was! I didn’t want miracles or to be wrinkle free I just wanted healthy skin that wasn’t cause for constant pain and discomfort.
I have been a client at Zest Spa for many years, soon after the Haddington Place Spa opened. I always admired how clear and calm the Therapist skin appeared and I was familiar with the very iconic Dermalogica brand but had never tried it, I was so used to trawling the internet and chemists for skin remedies which would end up being so harsh my skin would end up worse. I never thought the solution would be sitting on the shelf during my monthly visits to Zest. My confidence was so shattered I almost didn’t feel ‘entitled’ to use such luxury products, my skin condition was hardly going to be the face of Dermalogica! I also couldn’t imagine that it would work because nothing else had.
So I soldiered on fully aware that my skin continued to get worse, becoming obsessed with how it looked, covering it with make up, which really only accentuated that it was being used badly as camouflage rather than a beautifier. The pain and discomfort in my skin becoming a normal every day situation. I wouldn’t have known it would get even worse, winter 2011 I developed a serious acne infection I was prescribed a massive dose of medication and eventually after 24 years my skin problems were taken seriously and I was referred to a dermatologist, the only option available was a six month course of a VERY powerful medication, it had no guarantee of working 100% but I needed help and if this was the last chance saloon for my skin … I had to try it.
The medication worked to a degree but about six months after the treatment ended the acne returned, granted not as bad as before but it was ambitious and persistent in returning and it brought a friend with it in the form of Rosacea, I felt back to square one. Not knowing any better I reverted back to using harsh products. Louise (angel of my monthly sanity that she is) had been advising me for a while to try the Dermalogica range and had been very generous with samples for me to try, I tried them and liked them but in all honesty I didn’t really wholly invest (sorry Louise!)
Back to my lack of belief in my ‘entitlement’ to having good skin and the cost factor, lets not pretend, the products are at the high end of the market, I almost couldn’t justify the cost for the range I’d benefit from. Even today I get looks of surprise and comments of expense when I tell people I only use Dermalogica skin products … Oops giving the game away!
In 2013 I decided to have my first Dermalogica Face Mapping treatment, it was clear how my skin had been affected by years of acne, harsh products and now the Rosacea. I made a decision to really give the system for my skin a go, the only product I had been using fairly regularly had been the Ultra Calming Barrier Repair and the Ultra Calming Cleanser but I decided I didn’t want to revert back to medication, harsh treatments and poorly chosen products so decided to wholly embrace the Dermalogica regime that was recommended.
Autumn 2014, I am celebrating the first year in 27 years of needing NO medication for my acne and Rosacea I wholly and completely put this down to my now twice daily Dermalogica routine. Ultra Calming Cleanser, double cleanse at night, single cleanse in the morning, it is wonderful to use, sheer luxury, makes my skin feel wonderfully clean and fresh, three times weekly I use Daily Microfoliant, it boosts my skin, gently sloughs away dead skin and calms any redness I may have, twice daily (and as needed if my face is a little flushed or sensitive) I use Ultra Calming Serum Concentrate just on the areas of my face that need it and then twice a day the Intensive Moisture Balance, the best moisturiser I have ever used. What I have found is that when used daily the range is very economical to use, because it is such high quality a very little goes a very long way, I LOVE that Dermalogica has never relied on or bought into celebrity endorsement (that is really important for me) and I hope they never do as the quality of the products speak for themselves … and we all know the celebrities get paid a fortune for endorsing products that they don’t even use!
I was on holiday recently and only chose to wear make up one night, surprisingly what was best about that was taking it off again at the end of the night, wearing the make up made my skin feel smothered and unclean, I am going on holiday again in a few weeks and I am am planning not to take any makeup with me. The Dermalogica regime I now use religiously twice daily has given me clear, clean calm and nourished skin like I never imagined. I now get comments on what good skin I have and I have absolute confidence that for the first time since I was a teenager people see me and not a woman with bad skin problems.
I’d say to any clients of the wonderful team at Zest that if they are recommending you try the Dermalogica range and the free Skin Mapping give it a try as you may just find your skin problems become a thing of the past and can face a future of having healthy skin.
It really has changed my life Louise, I absolutely swear by the fact that the Dermalogica range you recommended to me has turned my skin problems around. I love how my skin feels and looks, not advertisement photoshop perfect, just natural healthy nourished skin.
Thank you so much for gently supporting me in the direction you have done.” Morag
